In the dictionary and in mathematical terms, polygon is defined as a many sided figure or having various angles. In musical terms, Ralph Penland calls his 'live' ensemble 'The Penland Polygon'. The drummer, percussionist, composer / arranger and producer has worked with the finest artists in jazz and the entire music industry ! Ralph has played many musical styles with artists like : Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Nancy Wilson, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughn, Marvin Gaye, Natalie Cole, Branford Marsalis, Joe Sample,Etta James , Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana . Ralph Penland has established a very personalized multi-talented jazz unit. Together they create and stretch the boundaries of jazz, and hint at many musical styles. The many sides of versatility in 'The Penland Polygon' is unmistakable in their 'live' performance presentations!

The Penland Polygon Quintet has played many clubs, concerts, and music festivals, from their base in Southern California to Seattle, Washington to New York City.
